At TEMPO School, we believe that it is not only gifted students who prosper in a challenging academic environment, but that all children, with encouragement, parental support, and focused teaching, will succeed.
TEMPO is accredited by the Province of Alberta and meets all requirements set by the government. This is the point at which common ground between TEMPO and the public, neighbourhood school ends. What makes this school particularly different is its focus and concentration on developing the minds of its students.
“Language is the foundation...”
In the Lower School (kindergarten through grade four), students focus on the acquisition of English language skills. The teaching of mathematics also begins in grade one, but English, reading, and handwriting are all taught as distinct subjects. French is added to the curriculum in grade two; geography is added in grade three. In grade four, the study of grammar replaces formal reading instruction, and there is an increasing emphasis on mathematics.
“Awareness of the world around us...”
IIn the Middle School (grades five through eight), students study English, grammar, mathematics, science, French, spelling, and geography. English and mathematics are especially emphasized. In grade six, the study of history replaces spelling. In grade seven, students begin S.T.E.M., and the science course is separated into physics and biology. Chemistry is added in grade eight.
“Moving to a higher degree...”
In the Upper School (grades nine through twelve), the program is designed to prepare students for a successful transition to university. All students follow the same program of study, comprised of English, mathematics, history, geography, French, chemistry, biology, physics, social studies, international politics, CALM and physical education.
Throughout this academic journey, students are encouraged to apply themselves to the tasks before them. There is no time wasted at TEMPO School. Students develop sound work habits and learn first-hand that regular and daily application brings great reward.
This approach has resulted in TEMPO students consistently exceeding provincial outcomes on both achievement tests and diploma examinations.
“Education is a long-term investment…”
Classes at TEMPO consist of about 20 students. This low student/teacher ratio allows for a more personal relationship between teachers and students than is possible in classes consisting of a larger number of students. With more time and space for individual attention, our teachers come to know students well, creating a safe and orderly school environment where no one is left behind.
“Tradition writes a history of success…”
TEMPO is a traditional school. The most obvious sign of this may be the uniforms our students wear, but our commitment to traditional educational values is not simply a fashion choice. Tradition is deeply rooted in the subjects we teach and the high standard of behaviour we expect. We have high expectations of our students so that our students will have high expectations of themselves.
At TEMPO, we take pride in avoiding the fads that blow like shifting winds across the educational landscape. We keep our eye firmly fixed on the fundamental goal, namely, to lay the intellectual foundation that will enable students to manage successfully, during adulthood, adversity and challenge. The teachers at TEMPO employ traditional methodology in the classroom because it works.
TEMPO has an appealing physical education program and a wide range of clubs and extracurricular activities. These are popular and important elements in the life of the school. However, nothing distracts our students from the academic focus that is the heartbeat of TEMPO.
